History in brief
The Naval Officers Club in Stockholm (SOSS) was formed in 1849 as an officer’s club and officers mess for naval officers stationed at the Stockholm naval yard and naval education centre at Skeppsholmen. One of the founding members was the prince of Sweden, Oscar, who later became King Oscar II. SOSS has since the start been the cornerstone of the naval officers social life in Stockholm with club facilities in the very centre of our capital. (SOSS is the Swedish shortening of the Swedish name – “Sjöofficerssällskapet i Stockholm”)
The Club today
For being an officer’s club with a history that spans over 170 years, SOSS is a very active and thriving club with a wide range of activities for its 1300 members. Today, officers from the Army and Airforce are also much welcome to join our club but the majority consist of course of officers from the Navy and the Marine Corps. Our main mission is to give our members a platform for social gatherings among officers in the capital and this is achieved in many different ways: through club dinners with invited speakers and guests, member’s lunch, music nights, officers ball, Christmas- and National day celebrations and much more.
Our Club hosted the Swedish Navy 500 years Anniversary Ball in 2022 with 1058 attendees including 13 foreign Naval Chiefs. Guest of honour was his majesty the King, Carl XVI Gustaf Bernadotte and Queen Silvia.
